Berlin – Helping a creative agency with a purpose grow

Christina has been an invaluable asset to our business during its early growth phase. Our workload wasn’t yet consistent enough to justify a full- or even part-time permanent hire, so finding someone as experienced and versatile as Christina was a game changer. She seamlessly managed clients and creative partners alike, and that combined with her willingness to scale her hours to suit incoming work meant that we had all the skills and time commitment we needed at our fingertips. From day one she has been so embedded in the team that we’ve always considered her a true ‘Berliner’.
— John Linton, Managing Director Strategy

The Challenge

Berlin was founded in 2023 by creative agency veterans John Linton (Managing Partner, Strategy) and Richard Berney (Managing Partner, Creative), following more than a decade working together at a long-standing Perth-based agency. Their shared vision was to build ‘a creative agency in the public interest’ - one that creates environmental, social, and economic impact in harmony.

Especially in the start-up phase, the bold, public commitment to directing 20% of the agency’s time and profits toward pro-social and pro-environmental projects went hand in hand with the need to keep operating cost down while remaining agile and delivering the highest quality creative work.

With new business picking up, the team required support across several areas, including client and account management as well as production. They needed flexible support - both in terms of time commitment and scope - that could scale with the agency’s needs.

The Solution

Berlin contracted Purple Bean Consulting mid-2024, initially in the role of Client Lead on a 20-hour-per-week basis. It soon became clear that there was also a need for dedicated support across production, including managing photo and video shoots and the creation of other campaign outputs with internal and external crew and creatives.

As a result, Berlin and Purple Bean Consulting moved to a more flexible, requirements-based model, allowing hours and responsibilities to scale up or down in response to workload fluctuations and different project requirements.

How it’s going

Within just over a year, Berlin with the support of Purple Bean Consulting reaped several high-profile industry awards and experienced significant growth, leading to the permanent recruitment of three additional full-time employees in design, client services and production.
